Topic: My topic is homelessness. I chose this topic because I want to learn about its causes, government and community responses, and why some homeless people remain homeless. My goal is to effectively address and advocate for change.

Working Thesis: To effectively manage homelessness, a comprehensive strategy that considers underlying causes like mental health support and job training programs and acute shelter needs is needed.

Supporting Arguments:
1. To address homelessness, communities should take a coordinated approach, moving from a collection of individual programs to a community-wide response that is strategic, and data driven.

2. In spring 2023, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced $420 million in awards to address unsheltered homelessness in 32 communities.

3. A recent US report on the alarming lack of access to mental healthcare even for the well insured points to a broad-based crisis in mental health services. Ignoring laws ensuring parity, insurers provide much lower coverage for mental health treatment than would be tolerated for cardiac or cancer care, and out-of-pocket costs can run as high as $400 per private psychiatrist visit. The prospects for a homeless man or woman who is feeling anxious, depressed or suicidal are indeed dismal.

If your paragraphs are more than ¾ of a page in length, you must split them up. If you need help doing this, please ask.

Final Drafts should be error free

Follow these guidelines:

Include at least 1 brief and relevant quote (less than 4 lines of text) or paraphrase in each body paragraph (you don’t need quotes in your introduction or conclusion).

You MUST cite quotes and paraphrases in proper MLA format when you use them in your paragraphs.

Include no more than 2 long quotes (more than 4 lines). If your quote is longer than your analysis of the quote, you will lose points for underdeveloped analysis.

Analyze EACH quote. Analysis should be at least 2-3 sentences per quote. Do not simply summarize the quote. Ask yourself, “why is this quote important?” or “how does this quote support the ideas in this paragraph?”.

Don’t leave quotes hanging at the end of your paragraphs – add your own explanation and interpretation of the quote.

Don’t start body paragraphs with quotes; construct a clear and focused topic sentence in your own words.

PLEASE Include a thesis with a specific main point. Your thesis should CLEARLY relate to your topic

Be very specific.

YOUR THESIS SHOULD BE THE LAST SENTENCE OF YOUR INTRODUCTION.

Engage your reader by constructing an interesting introductory paragraph that provides context for your argument (describe the situation, provide background/brief story, or summarize the analysis of causes or effects the essay disputes).
