Oedipus the King (aka Oedipus Rex) is considered a classic in literature. Dating back to around 436 BC, it is still taught around the world today. One reason the play is still taught is the strong focus on humanity and human failing. Oedipus the King is considered didactic due to the lessons learned in the play. Remember, the play was written during a time when literacy was scarce, but people still needed to learn cultural mores and values. This is why plays were and are still an important part of humanity. The objective of this assignment is to have you gain experience in analyzing various uses of the elements of drama (plot, character, theme, diction, spectacle and setting) in a play to help convey a message. 1. Read Oedipus the King closely. As you read the play, analyze the way Sophocles uses character development, diction, melody, and setting to move the plot forward. 2. Write a 2 page (double spaced) critical analysis critique of the way Sophocles develops the relationship between Oedipus, Creon, and Teiresias, his use of diction and melody, and how the setting is moves as the plot moves. You must include 3-4 lines from the play to support your critique (MLA format required).
