Write the question you are interested in researching for your literature review.

THIS IS ANOTHER PART OF THE ASSIGHMENT INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1: Write the question you are interested in researching for your literature review

Step 2:

Search GALILEO and find one source for your paper from an academic journal and write one entry for your annotated bibliography. The entry should contain all of the following:

A. Write the full MLA citation (author(s). “Title of Article.” Title of Journal. volume and issue number. date. page numbers. url or doi).

B. One paragraph that describes what you found and what information it contains

C. One paragraph that evaluates its relevance, credibility, and authority for your research paper.

NOTE: There is a great guide on writing an effective annotated bibliography and a good example in your book, 15.5

Question: How can we prevent binge drinking on college campuses?

Peele, Stanton. “Reducing Harms from Youth Drinking.” Journal of Alcohol & Drug Education, vol. 50, no. 4, Dec. 2006, pp. 67–87. EBSCOhost, search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&AuthType=ip,shib&db=c9h&AN=24276178&site=eds-live&scope=site.

In this paper, Peele reviews a number of findings from previous surveys and studies that investigate the harms surrounding binge drinking and the effectiveness of strategies used to prevent it. He observes that education programs that emphasize total abstinence have not effectively decreased alcohol abuse. He also cites several studies that find that cultures that encourage less risky drinking behavior in youth tend have fewer rates of alcohol abuse in adulthood. He proposes that future education programs emphasize safe drinking habits rather than total abstinence.

This was a fascinating paper to read and it approaches the problem from a totally different angle than what I had expected. I had thought the answer to binge drinking would have something to do with limiting access to alcohol, perhaps by creating more stringent policing in colleges. Not only does this article offer a different solution altogether (focusing on education rather than policing), but it also suggests that my initial solution may actually make the problem worse by focusing on the abstinance message rather than providing a safe place for students to practice and learn safe drinking habits. The article is authoritative in that is was published in a peer-reviewed journal and cites a ton of research and studies. The only concern I have is that the paper was published in 2006, so I would be interested in finding if future programs that actually tried Peele’s proposal have proven effective.
