4. While watching the documentary, take careful notes as you evaluate what you are learning and decide what to include in your essay.
5. Once you complete your information gathering experience, Create a 3-5 pages paper that answers reflective prompts about the experience. Add photos to your essay from the Internet related to the civil rights struggle to punctuate your essay. Be thoughtful about constructing this essay based on the placement of the photos.
6. The FOUR prompts (a-d) for this essay are as follows:
a. Demonstrate that you understand the significance of what you have learned. Choose one film and answer the following KEY questions:
Film One:
– Why is voting important?
– What difference voting can make?
– What makes a social movement in general successful?
Film Two:
– State’s Rights vs Slavery?
– What was the motivating factor that lead to the conflict?
– Examine the reasons behind Mississippi’s decision to secede from the United States, and the ramifications that action had on its citizens
b. Compare the information you gathered in this experience to the material you are learning in American Government class. Select specific course concepts that align with what you have learned in this film review and share them in your essay. Defend your selections by explaining why they align.
c. Provide an argument as to why these kinds of student experiences are important to enhance civic education.
d. Identify the specific career skills necessary to complete this assignment and provide an analysis as to how those skills might be useful in your academic pathway and civic life.
7. Do not look up information about this civic engagement film activity on the Internet other than to find photos to add to your essay. ALL content in your reflective essay must be your own. Using information from any source but your own efforts at research will be considered academic dishonesty, which violated GSU’s Plagiarism Policy and can result in a failing grade in the class or expulsion from College.
8. The paper should be two-pages with one inch margins in a 12 point font. Address all four prompts thoroughly in your essay. The photos should enhance the essay but not replace the text. The essay should be 1000-1200 words in length. Proof read for spelling, grammar, punctuation and capitalization errors. This essay will be housed in Portfolium as a demonstration of student abilities and can be used as supporting documentation with future employers. Make it shine!
